MLB Expansion Into Uncharted Territory
More teams, more chances for athletes to get on base
Lake Charles, MO – Emerging in 1901, the American League organized competition between eight teams, later expanding to 15. Today, Major League Baseball is composed of double that, accounting for a revenue of more than $10 billion in 2022.
The current major league consists of 750 active players. Compared to 1934, when five of the eight National League team managers were also players, the new era of baseball has countless opportunities available to athletes, coaches, trainers and other staff. Continuing its growth, the MLB has declared that it may expand its reach to new destinations, with one potentially finding a home in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Former Utah Jazz majority owner, Gail Miller is advocating for an MLB expansion into the state, which has only one professional team out of the four major North American sports leagues. The business-woman from Sandy, Utah is leading the charge with an investor group named Big League Utah, and is striving against the efforts of other cities such as Nashville and Portland who are also hoping to land an MLB squad for the first time.
The economic impact of a pro baseball team in a city like Salt Lake could be substantial, but arguably more important would be the connections made with young fans and aspiring athletes who hope to one day make it to the big show.
The “40-man roster” would allow 80 more active MLB players to make the cut each season, and likely a similar number of team faculty. The transition into pro sports is a challenging task that requires commitment and guidance at a younger age than ever before.
Premier Sports Academy helps reduce the stress of taking steps toward professional life, and prepares high-school athletes for the many obstacles that they will face along the way. PSA’s new (16,000 square foot) training facility for its baseball and softball players, located in Lake Charles, Missouri, is an example of our robust commitment to preparing athletes both physically and mentally. The innovative space gives athletes excellent access to resources that help them improve their skills, and provides them with professional-level training that is the norm in the MLB and USA Softball.
